Eleanor McEvoy & Edey, Power & Randall Saturday 9th February 2008 @ 7.30pm Pocklington Arts Centre
Irish singer songwriter ELEANOR McEVOY returns to the area for a special concert at Pocklington Arts Centre on Saturday 9 February at 8pm. The popular performer will be joined by EDEY, POWER & RANDALL in a musical experiment see what happens when the musicians share the stage together. The event is being hosted by Beverley Folk Festival as part of their on-going commitment to providing innovative and exciting musical events in the area.
Eleanor McEvoy first shot to prominence when her song ‘A Woman’s Heart’ was used as the title track to one of the largest selling Irish albums of all time. The song itself became an immediate hit and is now a recognised Irish standard with countless cover versions. Signed to Geffen Records Eleanor toured the world achieving chart success in many countries with the eponymous album ‘EleanorMcEvoy’. A move from Geffen to Sony Columbia yielded more highly rated albums before she set up her own company from which classics such as ‘Yola’ (Hi-Fi Plus album of the year) ‘Early Hours’ and ‘Out There’ have been released.
Joining her for this special evening are EDEY, POWER & RANDALL - a stunning band led by the virtuoso guitarist and melodeon player Tim Edey. Tim has played in the finest of Celtic bands including - Lunasa and The Mike McGoldrick Band;as well as touring with the renowned Irish show ‘Magic Of The Dance’. At 27 he is regarded by many as one of the finest melodeon/accordion and guitar players of his generation Alongside Tim will be Brendan Power, a stunning harmonica player who has recorded with Sting, Van Morrison and Shirley Bassey, Completing the line-up is Lucy Randall a first rate percussionist who toured with Seth Lakeman in 2006.
The band recently put on a highly impressive performance on the BBC’s. Later with Jools Holland show. Any audience left in the hands of these three daring musicians will find itself led on a musical adventure, as they drift effortlessly between haunting Kerry airs, stomping rhythm and blues, intricate Bulgarian melodies, uplifting Irish dance tunes, laid back Caribbean rhythms, and much more.
The concert is one of ten dates on the latest Nu-Routes tour which mixes performers of different styles and experience for its unique tours. Organiser Cally Barker added “These four musicians have very different backgrounds so it will be fascinating to see how they blend and mix the songs and styles for this unique concert tour.”
Support for the evening is by Sunderland singer-songwriter PAUL LIDDELL.

Join Alice on her magical adventure as she chases the White rabbit back in time on a fantastic spiralling journey into Wonderland. Watch her change in size in this dream-like shadow adaptation of the famous tale by Lewis Carroll. On her journey she meets the Cheshire Cat, a two-legged dragon and the March Hare at the mediaeval Mad Hatter’s Tea party. But beware the Queen of Hearts or you might just lose your head!
My family stayed at Minster Garth over the Christmas period, and thought the decor in the rooms was excellent, exceptionally clean, friendly but not intrusive. They loved the idea of the continental breakfast, finding a good selection of breakfast cereals, fresh fruit, etc. They would certainly stay there again on their next visit.
Terence Mockridge
Stylish place, brilliantly placed for the Minster and central Beverley. Loved the situation and the warm welcome - well deserving of the 4* rating. Hope to return!
Sue Ward
I visit the Minster Garth Guest House reguarly and appreciate the central location (right next to the Minster) and the fact that I have my privacy. It’s like a home from home. The breakfast is continental and you can have it when you like, so you can please yourself when you come and go
Richard Hart
Recently used Minster Garth for visiting family. We found that the landlady was very helpful and accommodating. We really appreciated the flexibility that these facilities offer. The separate entrance allowed us to have complete freedom to come and go. The fridge was well stocked with more than enough provisions for continental breakfast as well as generous tea and coffee making supplies. Will definitely use them again.
Vixen Broadcasting Ltd. has received the best start possible to the New Year, with the award of a Community Radio licence by the radio regulator, OFCOM.
After 41/2 years of short-term trial broadcasts under the name, “Vixen 87″, the group has finally been given the go-ahead to set-up a permanent service for an initial 5 year period. Although the station will still be on the FM/VHF waveband, the frequency will change from the traditional 87.9, as this is reserved for trial broadcasts.
The licence is to provide a localised radio service to Market Weighton, Holme-Upon-Spalding Moor and Pocklington. Although it is hoped that the station will cover an area incorporating, South Cave, Howden, Gilberdyke, Newport, and Middleton-On-The-Wolds.
Financed mainly by grant funding, and local advertising & sponsorship, the station will continue to be run by volunteers, as the general operating costs of a radio station are high, without the inclusion of staff wages.
From listener research carried out over the 9 trial broadcasts and in order to maintain a high standard of output with the available voluntary workforce, the station will initially be providing live weekend programming, with a weekday daytime rolling local information, live news and classic “Vixen style” music service, that it’s listeners know and love. This will be supplemented by evening specialist niche programmes as per the trial broadcasts, giving its listeners a full 24 hours-a-day service from Day 1.
A great deal of new engineering and administrative work will need to be carried out before the station commences full-time broadcasting. As such, the launch date has not been finalised, but is expected to be towards the end of the year or early 2009.
Vixen Broadcasting Ltd. will be looking to recruit volunteers from all age ranges to train to work on its sports, news, and community reporting features, and to help with backroom administrative tasks such as fundraising and advertising. The group also welcomes input from all local communities who wish to publicise their events and activities.
