Once again the Beverley Festival comes up trumps with its line-up of artists by bringing an eclectic mix of top artists to the stage.

Artists confirmed include legendary English punk rockers, Buzzcocks, Dave Swarbrick’s Whippersnapper, which is reforming to celebrate the festival’s anniversary.  25 years ago the festival’s headline act included local artists The Waterson’s, this year Waterson:Carthy with family member Mike Waterson will revisit the festival, as will Michael McGoldrick and his excellent Irish band, and festival favourites Chumbawumba.  Bringing the weekend’s celebrations to an end will be the wonderful Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, who will be visiting Beverley for the first time. As the festival aims to encompass a broader audience and to make music of all types accessible to everyone, it is delighted to welcome to the programme , internationally acclaimed violin player, Tasmin Little, who recently announced her campaign to “meet the challenge of reaching those people who tend to switch off at the words ‘classical music’, (The Independent) . Little, aims to do this through her offer of three tracks from her latest album, ‘The Naked Violin’, free as a download from her website. 

Three of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners will also be appearing including Horizon Award winner Rachel Unthank and The Winterset, and winner of Best Album and Best Track, Martin Simpson with Musician of the Year  Andy Cutting.  Roy Bailey and the ever charismatic Tony Benn will perform ‘The Writing on the Wall’, a thrilling history of political dissent from the 14^th Century to the present day.  Also appearing will be festival favourites, Eleanor McEvoy and Edwina Hayes and from the crossroads of country, folk and bluegrass in the US Rachel Harrington will be bringing her acoustic Americana.

To add a lighter side to the festival we welcome for the first time the charismatic John Shuttleworth who will be bringing his documentary film “It’s Nice up North” to educate festival audiences about the merits of the North of England.  Dave Tordoff will also be giving his version of the high life in Goole as seen by a laser screeding contractor!  See him to believe him.

Alongside these top artists the Festival Village will be offering the best of the local and national young performers and contemporary artists in a laid back atmosphere.  Family events, craft stalls and food and the late night Festival Club will all be found here alongside the newly established Wold Top Festival Bar serving some of the finest ales in the region.

Watch out for street entertainment around the town and music and song in the pubs.  Altogether experience a great weekend of entertainment and fun…..

PACKING A PUNCH AND JUDY

Beverley Puppet Festival is BACK during the first weekend in July 2008
(4th - 6th)

Where else but in the historic streets of Beverley, East Yorkshire, would you find life size gorillas stopping traffic and wandering alongside a mediaeval walking booth which houses Robin Hood.

The festival will welcome the return of festival favourites, Lempen Puppet Theatre and Garlic Theatre, and bring in a host of puppeteers never before seen in this town. Indigo Moon Theatre will perform sophisticated shadow theatre in a classic tale with links to Beverley town and Lewis Caroll’s white rabbit. From traditional Punch & Judy to stunning computer animated visuals and interactive digital media in The Box it Came In by Arts in Motion, this year’s programme will thrill audiences of all ages. Teenage/adult shows will include Thingumajig’s The Vertigo of Sheep which received an award of excellence in the US.

The festival would love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering in return for travel expenses and a festival pass. It is a great way to take part in a weekend packed with colour and entertainment.

Beverley Arts Trust Chairman and Festival organiser, Anna Ingleby, said ‘We are absolutely over the moon to be able to bring the third festival back to Beverley. This year’s event will offer 22 performances for all ages to enjoy. We will also introduce workshops for all the family to take part in and, yet again, our education project will lead to a festival showcase, this time on the Friday afternoon to launch the weekend’s entertainment.’

BEVERLEY SNAPS UP THE BEST!

Beverley Folk Festival is expecting a massive demand for tickets after two of its major acts booked to appear at this year’s event swept the board at the BBC RADIO 2’s FOLK AWARDS, presented at the Brewery, London this week.

MARTIN SIMPSON scooped Best Album andBest Original Song while rising stars on the scene RACHEL UNTHANK & THE WINTERSET ran away with the Horizon Award for emerging new talent. Scunthorpe born Martin was also nominated for Folk Singer and Musician of the Year while Rachel was nominated for three other awards, Best Group, Best Album and Best Live Act.

Festival Organiser Cally Barker said “We are delighted that our festival programme will combine such a mix of experienced and new talent on the folk scene.  There will be something for everyone at this 25^th birthday extravanganza.”

The past months have been a rollercoaster ride for Classic fm’s composer in residence as the tour took him around the country. Venues ranged in audience side, but undoubtedly the reactions from those of you who attended were astoundingly positive. So much so infact that Patrick wished to take the tour to those areas it did not reach.  Not only are there now more dates to come but Patrick has been working towards the release of a new Compilation album The Essential Patrick Hawes. This will endeavor to provide those who like his music with a collection to treasure. It will contain previously released and a selection of unreleased pieces, orchestral, piano and choral as well as tracks from his film score for the wonderful film The Incredible Mrs Ritchie.

The Piano Recital will be a chance to hear Patrick’s latest release. Pieces of beautiful simplicity and expression written as Classic Fm composer in Residence. The concert lasts aproximately an hour and includes not only performances of the pieces but interjections by Patrick as he explains the meaning behind his music and the thought process in its creation. Following the concert there will be a chance to meet and talk with Patrick.

Beverley has been named as the Number One town in a UK Affordable Affluence Research survey. carried out by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The survey identifies towns and cities within the UK where an affluent lifestyle is available at an affordable price.  Beverley was named the winner because it offers everything people are looking for, from Michelin starred restaurants, award-winning golf course, high performing schools and a good selection of quality shopping outlets.

With average house prices in Beverley of around £182,000, which is just £2,000 above the national average, together with average earnings of around £37,000, it shows that a reasonably wealthy lifestyle is within the reach of many people.

A comment taken from the Royal Bank of Scotland’s report states “When it comes to affordability it is easy to see why Beverley deserves first place, with average property price just a little over the national average, and average earnings in the town are £37,000 – making this market town extremely attractively-priced relative to the lifestyle it affords.

In all, 20 towns and cities made up the list, including Maidstone, Chester, Perth, Salford, Inverness and Huddersfield.
