Not since 1910, when they were edged out on goal average by Oldham, have Hull City been as close as they are now to securing top flight football. Always dogged by the tag of being the largest city in Europe never to have had a team in the top division of their domestic league, Hull City stand on the brink of a glorious achievement that has taken 104 years to fulfill.
With only three games left the Tigers currently sit second in the Championship table behind West Bromich Albion - a position, which if maintained until 4th May, would guarantee promotion to the Premiership for next season.
Barring a disasterous run-in, which seems unlikely as Hull have won seven of their last nine games, a place in the play-offs is assured at the very least, but how the supporters would love the Tigers to be promoted without having to endure that end-of-season nail-biting and stomach-churning climax.
So why is it that Hull City have produced this fantastic surge up the table this season - especially after finishing just one place above relegation last term?
Immense credit has to go to the players of course, but in Chairman, Paul Duffen, and a management team of Phil Brown and Brian Horton, Hull City have a back room staff that has instilled confidence in the team and their influence has been paramount in the upturn in form.
After the opening five games of the season, and with only one win in that time, Hull City sat in 20th place. Until mid-December the Tigers form, and position in the table, was very up and down with little momentum gained. It was at this point in the season that things started to change - and it came on the back of two heavy defeats at Preston and Southampton. The Tigers had lost 3-0 and Deepdale and been mauled 4-0 at St. Mary’s but bounced back with a fine 2-0 win against Leicester at the KC Stadium. Those two games at Preston and Southampton seemed to galvanise the team and from then on Hull City have put together an impressive run of form that has made their rivals sit up and take note and given loyal supporters the dream of top-flight football for the first time.
The success on the field has been based on a solid defence of goalkeeper Bo Myhill and a back four of Sam Ricketts, Michael Turner, Wayne Brown and Andy Dawson. In midfield, Dean Marney has at last shown the skills and class of a Premiership quality player and skipper Ian Ashbee is playing the best football of his career that is making him a real contender for player of the year. Up front Fraizer Campbell has been a revelation since his arrival on-loan from Manchester United and Caleb Folan has proved why City paid a club record fee to Wigan for his services with a string of eye-catching displays and vital goals. Add this together with the steadying influence and unselfish displays from the likes of Bryan Hughes, Henrik Pedersen and Jay-Jay Okocha (when fit!) and you can see why Hull have emerged as promotion front runners. And we haven’t even mentioned Dean Windass yet! The old war-horse is now in his 40th year but still has the enthusiasm and capabilities of a player half his age. He would run through a brick wall for Hull City and the influence he has had since returning to the Tigers cannot be emphasised too much - he is Mr. Hull City. Although without exception individuals have performed terrifically of late, the key to this unrivalled success has been based on teamwork. Hull have performed as a team - they attack and defend as one giving support to each other when needed. They are oozing confidence at the moment while others are suffering from nerves. They defend as a unit and always look capable of scoring goals - yes these are indeed heady days at Hull City.
West Brom are still favourites to secure the Championship Crown but while they, and the chasing pack, have faltered recently, Hull have maintained their momentum and run of form to suggest that the top place is not beyondthe realms of possibility. Starting with Sheffiels Utd. on Saturday, Hull City know that destiny is in their own hands - three wins (or maybe two) and that 104 year wait will finally be over.
It’s back….bigger and better… East Yorkshire’s answer to Glastonbury
An exciting 3-day festival of music featuring some of the country’s top tribute bands is back for its 2nd appearance in East Yorkshire.
The Glastonbury-style event, which attracted around 3,000 people last year, is expected at least to double following its massive success.
It’s being held again at the Driffield Showground, Kellythorpe near Driffield on 15th to 17th August.
But music lovers can get a taste of what’s to come at the Tribfest Taster being staged at Hull City Hall on Saturday 17th May 2008.
It will feature four top tribute bands - The Antarctic Monkeys, a tribute to the Arctic Monkeys who already have national acclaim, The Fillers, a tribute to The Killers who have made a massive impact on the UK tribute scene, and two of the top Tribfest ‘07 bands who played last year’s festival, Achtung Baby, a tribute to U2 and our very own Hull-based band topping the bill, Badness, a tribute to Madness/Ska.
To get festival-goers in the mood for Tribfest 08, people who attend Tribfest Taster are being urged to go in their wellies!
The gig, which starts at 7pm, will provide four and a half hours of quality music aimed at families.
“The Tribfest Taster was very successful last year. Over 1,000 people attended, but we have gone one better this year and added another band,” said Eddy Faulkner, of Tribfest and Tribfest Taster organiser Ed Entertainments.
“We are aiming this night at all ages especially families, as we have a special price of £50 for a family of four. We’ve got a good mix of bands to suit all ages.
“It’s like a mini indoor festival so we would like everyone to turn up in their festival wellies!!!!”
Anyone buying a Tribfest Taster ticket can get 15% off their Tribfest 08 Festival ticket if they keep their Taster ticket stub and redeem it at the Hull City booking office.
Tickets for the Taster are priced at;
£20 Adults £10 Children 5-16 years £15 Concessions £50 2 Adults 2 Children
They are available on 01482 226655 or at Bridlington or Beverley Tourist Office.
Both this summer’s Tribfest and the Tribfest Taster are being organized by Eddy Faulkner, of Ed Entertainments Ltd, who is also the front man of the highly-acclaimed tribute band, The Beautiful Couch, tribute to the Beautiful South & Housemartins
“The idea for Tribfest came after seeing the reaction The Beautiful Couch and other tribute bands receive at gigs around the country,” said Eddy. “The Couch has played twice at the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool, which attracts around 400,000 people over the weekend; it has a full day dedicated to the UK’s top tribute bands.
“If Liverpool can do it then why can’t we? We are trying to create our very own tribute band event which I feel over the next few years will become nationally recognized. I think East Yorkshire has suffered as far as music festivals are concerned, but feel we have now filled the gap.
“We’re using last year’s festival as our inspiration - making it bigger and better this year. We have added another day - with music starting Friday 15th August at 6pm instead of at noon on Saturday, which increases the number of bands from 18 to 22 over the weekend.
“Lots of other entertainment will be on offer. This year we have acquired the services of Music Exchange who run local events in Hull who will be gathering some of the top local acts to perform at the festival.
“Because of the family element we are increasing the entertainment for children, stalls, food and drink, and lots of other onsite activities. It should be a fantastic, fun weekend, which will pull more people into the East Yorkshire area.”
The weekend camping event will be staged at Driffield Showground, Driffield, on Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August 2008.
The new line up of 22 bands will be released mid April 2008.
Eddy is searching for more sponsors for Tribfest, as well as stall holders, caterers and other firms that might want to get involved.
“We got the backing of local businesses last year including, Viking FM, Bonus Electrical, East Riding Council, Stratstone Mini as well as several smaller companies who sponsored the bands which was fantastic with it being a new event,” said Eddy.
“Kingston Communications have also agreed to get involved in Tribfest ‘08 and all businesses who supported us last year are getting on board this year again which is a testament to the success of the event. Driffield Showground was absolutely top class for an event of this nature, with great facilities.”
Ed Entertainments are putting together some Sponsor/VIPs Packages for companies and individuals alike which will be available in the coming weeks.
Anyone interested in sponsoring Tribfest ‘08 in the summer, we would like to invite them to the Tribfest Taster at the Hull City Hall to see the quality of the bands on offer and chat about what we can offer companies within the Festival Weekend.

High Farm Country Farm gets the go-ahead for more holiday homes at their park at Routh, nr Beverley
A holiday park near Beverley has received approval from East Riding County Council for a major extension.
High Farm Country Park at Routh can now build a further 125 timber lodge holiday homes to help it meet unprecedented demand.
Park owner, Pat Northgraves, described the announcement as great news. “There’s a real sense of momentum here and we didn’t want to lose any of it. There’s a changing clientele out there that wants more luxurious holiday homes, a relaxing pace of life and tranquil surroundings. We’re happy to oblige”.
Work has already begun on landscaping the area earmarked for the new lodges in a way that fits in with the park’s ethos of creating a peaceful and natural environment.
The park was recently awarded the David Bellamy Award for Conservation and holds a five star tourist award for the quality of its farmhouse cottages.
Mr Northgraves said “The idea at High Farm is for visitors to have as relaxing and enjoyable time as possible, so we’ve focused on the whole experience. We’re positioning the timber lodges within spacious plots around one of our lakes, overlooking miles of open countryside”.
The planning approval coincides with the company’s launch of the “Lifestyle Lodge” - the region’s first locally-built designer timber building.
The lodges are made by Beverley-based Coastline Leisure, Cayline Cabinets of Hornsea, and Beverley Pine, of Hull Road, Woodmansey.
Mr Northgraves said the new timber lodges would bring “something different” to the park.
He said “They are built with imagination and care by local craftsmen to create the perfect living space”.

Leading automotive paintwork restorer Richard Hutchins has created the ultimate ‘before and after’ demonstration of his services - by letting one half of his car rot whilst the other side is pampered.
The barmy Yorkshireman even drives it on public roads as it is fully road legal, although his ‘other half’, Carolynne, isn’t so keen. Whilst the driver’s side is almost factory fresh, the passenger side is dirty, suffers from torn trim and is littered with empty crisp packets.
“It’s a total embarrassment for me,” explained Carolynne. “Richard loves to drive it everywhere to show off his talents, but you can only see the passenger side from the pavement. If he collects me from town, passers-by think the whole car is like that and tut in disgust.”
However, from the offside, the car looks almost as good as it did when it left Stuttgart. Richard has:
Completely renovated half the paintwork, turning it from a dusty pink to a shining red and removed dents and other defects.
Comprehensively cleaned and detailed half the exterior.
Repaired, cleaned and renovated half the interior, including seats and trim
“I bought the car for under 200 GBP and it was in a real state, but driveable,” says Richard. “The paint was really faded, so I knew it would come up well. After doing one side, I knew that no-one would believe it was the same car afterwards, so I decided to leave the passenger side how it was.
“It shows what professional paint restoration can do. You don’t always need a respray, and even a good clean can work wonders.”
Vixen Broadcasting Ltd. has received the best start possible to the New Year, with the award of a Community Radio licence by the radio regulator, OFCOM.
After 41/2 years of short-term trial broadcasts under the name, “Vixen 87″, the group has finally been given the go-ahead to set-up a permanent service for an initial 5 year period. Although the station will still be on the FM/VHF waveband, the frequency will change from the traditional 87.9, as this is reserved for trial broadcasts.
The licence is to provide a localised radio service to Market Weighton, Holme-Upon-Spalding Moor and Pocklington. Although it is hoped that the station will cover an area incorporating, South Cave, Howden, Gilberdyke, Newport, and Middleton-On-The-Wolds.
Financed mainly by grant funding, and local advertising & sponsorship, the station will continue to be run by volunteers, as the general operating costs of a radio station are high, without the inclusion of staff wages.
From listener research carried out over the 9 trial broadcasts and in order to maintain a high standard of output with the available voluntary workforce, the station will initially be providing live weekend programming, with a weekday daytime rolling local information, live news and classic “Vixen style” music service, that it’s listeners know and love. This will be supplemented by evening specialist niche programmes as per the trial broadcasts, giving its listeners a full 24 hours-a-day service from Day 1.
A great deal of new engineering and administrative work will need to be carried out before the station commences full-time broadcasting. As such, the launch date has not been finalised, but is expected to be towards the end of the year or early 2009.
Vixen Broadcasting Ltd. will be looking to recruit volunteers from all age ranges to train to work on its sports, news, and community reporting features, and to help with backroom administrative tasks such as fundraising and advertising. The group also welcomes input from all local communities who wish to publicise their events and activities.
Cottingham, East Yorkshire - 12 September 2007 - local people development specialist, Robert Purfield, strongly believes the people of Hull have been deprived of NLP long enough - so along with fellow NLP training specialist, Terry McCoy from Liverpool, he’s decided to run a 10-day NLP Practitioner course at the KC Stadium in Hull and so far the levels of interest are phenomenal.
Rob told us, “There is a lot of interest in NLP in our region, but in the past people wanting quality training have had to travel down to London. I am delighted to be able to offer this course in Hull and encouraged by the level of interest we are receiving. To run the course alongside me I have drafted in a first-class associate of mine - Terry McCoy from Liverpool - who I regularly work with down at the NLP Academy in London. You might say between us we are on a mission to bring NLP to the North!
“NLP is all about making your dreams come true. In a nutshell, on this course, participants will learn to study behaviour patterns and the brains internal filtering systems. Understanding both of these gives people the ability to mirror the behaviour patterns of other successful people so that they too can achieve their own dreams and goals.
“The techniques Terry and I use when training are highly effective because we focus on how the brain takes in, retains and recalls information. We have a lot of fun too - it’s interactive and entertaining, so anyone attending the course will receive 8 exciting days on the power of NLP and they will be offered a further two optional days for certification for anyone wishing to become an NLP Practitioner.”
Robert Purfield is co-founder and Director of Cottingham-based, people development agency, PHP Ltd and he’s known UK-wide for his work with organizations like Volvo, Linpac and Hull City Football Club.
Robert Purfield and Terry McCoy are amongst the few people in the world to have had the pleasure of being personally coached by NLP co-creator Dr. John Grinder as well as working with Carmen Bostic St Clair and Michael Carroll of the NLP Academy. This certification covers them both not only as Master Practitioners and certified trainers of NLP but they are accredited by John Grinder and the team to train other NLP trainers.
We asked Robert Purfield for examples of how people use NLP techniques to get more out of life. He explained, “NLP can be used for all areas of life, whether it’s to become more successful in your career, to get more out of your personal life or even to overcome phobias and debilitating fears. By understanding behaviour patterns and your own internal filtering system you can focus on achieving whatever outcome you want in life.”
You can hear a recent BBC Radio Humberside interview with Robert Purfield on this subject on www.onlinenlp.co.uk.
The course, which is for people wishing to help themselves and others achieve the outcomes they want from life and for those who wish to become certified NLP Practitioners, will take place 23-30 November 2007 at the KC Stadium in Hull (Price per delegate £1497). The optional 2 days for certification will take place again at the KC on 8 and 9 December 2007 (Price per delegate £150). For further information or to book places - visit www.nlponline.co.uk or phone 01482 300851.
